How does Future Coders protect my child during the pandemic?

Updated: Feb 4

We understand that all parents are apprehensive during this time of uncertainty and we want to reassure that we are doing everything to comply with government regulations and protect your child.

Let's start with a summary (for busy parents)

Red light

  • Face masks are encouraged, but not required, when inside (over 12s must wear masks at all times).

  • 1m apart at all times (seating will be double-spaced).

  • Parents are to show their vaccine passes if entering the building, wear masks and sign in using the COVID-19 tracer app.

  • Teacher (and any helpers) will wear a mask (I will possibly remove while teaching and 2m from kids) and evidence of full vaccination will be available.

Orange light

  • Face masks are encouraged, but not required, when inside. (over 12s must wear masks).

  • 1m apart at all times (double-spaced seating).

  • Parents are to show their vaccine passes if entering the building, wear masks and sign in using the COVID-19 tracer app.

  • Teacher (and any helpers) will wear a mask (I will possibly remove while teaching and 2m from kids) and evidence of full vaccination will be available.

Now for the long version for those who like details:

Red light

Face-masks

At the time of writing, all of New Zealand is in red light under the new traffic light scheme. Under this scheme, the Ministry of Health has NOT required mask-wearing by students at special interest education events (such as coding classes). Having said that, we fully support each parent's decision and support the children who choose to wear masks and support the decision of those that don't. The government does strongly recommend that masks be worn by students.

We also now have a large space and more classes so there is enough space to spread out the kids and still have a fun, engaging class. Double-spacing the seating arrangements in the classroom means that the kids will be at least 1 metre apart while they are seated as required in other educational settings.

Parents are required to wear masks while dropping off kids and show their vaccine passes if they enter the building. I appreciate your efforts to keep all the kids safe.

Also during the red light, I too will be wearing a mask while teaching (removing it only when I am 2 metres away from all students). I will adapt my teaching style to be more visual than usual to ensure that my points are not lost in a muffled presentation.

What happens if my child cannot attend class?

At present there are no online options for the Future Coders courses. If a child does become infected with COVID-19, keep them at home and I will pause their course. The remaining lessons will be discounted from the next term that they enrol in.
